چکیده

The projector augmented-wave ~PAW! method was developed by Blöchl as a method to accurately and efficiently calculate the electronic structure of materials within the framework of density-functional theory. It contains the numerical advantages of pseudopotential calculations while retaining the physics of all-electron calculations, including the correct nodal behavior of the valence-electron wave functions and the ability to include upper core states in addition to valence states in the self-consistent iterations. It uses many of the same ideas developed by Vanderbilt in his ‘‘soft pseudopotential’’ formalism and in earlier work by Blöchl in his ‘‘generalized separable potentials,’’ and has been successfully demonstrated for several interesting materials. We have developed a version of the PAW formalism for general use in structural and dynamical studies of materials. In the present paper, we investigate the accuracy of this implementation in comparison with corresponding results obtained using pseudopotential and linearized augmented-plane-wave ~LAPW! codes. We present results of calculations for the cohesive energy, equilibrium lattice constant, and bulk modulus for several representative covalent, ionic, and metallic materials including diamond, silicon, SiC, CaF2, fcc Ca, and bcc V. With the exception of CaF2, for which core-electron polarization effects are important, the structural properties of these materials are represented equally well by the PAW, LAPW, and pseudopotential formalisms. @S0163-1829~97!00404-9#

Accurate hyperfine couplings for C59N

We identify the shortcomings of existing ab initio quantum chemistry calculations for the hyperfine couplings in the recently characterized azafullerene, C59N. Standard gaussian basis sets in the context of all–electron calculations are insufficient to resolve the spin density near the cores of the atoms. Using the Projector Augmented Wave method implemented on top of a standard pseudopotential...

A Projector Augmented Wave (PAW) code for electronic structure calculations, Part II: pwpaw for periodic solids in a plane wave basis

The pwpaw code is a plane wave implementation of the Projector Augmented Wave (PAW) method developed by Blöchl for electronic structure calculations within the framework of density functional theory. In addition to the self-consistent calculation of the electronic structure of a periodic solid, the program has a number of other capabilities, including structural geometry optimization and molecu...

Quasiatomic orbitals for ab initio tight-binding analysis

Wave functions obtained from plane-wave density-functional theory (DFT) calculations using normconserving pseudopotential, ultrasoft pseudopotential, or projector augmented-wave method are efficiently and robustly transformed into a set of spatially localized nonorthogonal quasiatomic orbitals (QOs) with pseudoangular momentum quantum numbers. We demonstrate that these minimal-basis orbitals ca...

Calculations of Mössbauer parameters in solids by DFT bandstructure calculations

A short introduction to periodic bandstructure methods suitable for the calculation of Mössbauer parameters is presented. These methods are based on density functional theory (because we want to treat big and complicated systems) and must be accurate not only in the bonding region (like pseudopotential approaches), but also near the atomic nuclei since Mössbauer parameters depend crucially on t...
